first two from Fully Booked

It was actually meant to be a joke but I admit, there’s some truth to it. If I were to translate my action into words, in my native tongue, that act would definitely be “parinig” and “palambing”. Fortunately, my brother Ariel who is based in Manila, fell for it and without having second thoughts, he instantly said “yes” after hearing his young sister’s request. He didn’t actually say the “yes” word but instead, “What kind?” I suddenly broke into a smile and I knew that moment, there’s no way he wouldn’t give in to my request.

My request finally reached my hands last Saturday via the courier. I carefully unpacked the pouch, too excited to see and touch the items. The books were entitled “Dear John”, the latest from Nicholas Sparks and wonder of all wonders, “Eclipse”, the 3rd book of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga. As I’ve requested, my brother didn’t dare get the price tag. He didn’t even bother to get the plastic wrapper. He sent the books still packed with Fully Booked plastic bag to assure me that he did purchase them from Fully Booked. I was in 7th heaven! If my brother was only here, I could have kissed him a thousand times. It’s just books but the happiness it gave me was indescribable. I still couldn’t read the “Eclipse” though because I still have to purchase the first two of the said saga. But anyway, at least, I got hold of it already. One down, three more to go…

Now, I’m thinking…who would be the next person I would make “parinig” and “palambing” to again? I’m so “kapal muka”, ever!

another book series to delve into

Last week, me and my good friend were talking about this gadget called IPod Shuffle which amazingly dropped its price as of this time. Being music lovers as we are, we were pondering about it but it never really gave us enough urge to own one. She even told me to forget about it because there are still a lot of music gadgets that are cheaper than the IPod shuffle. Before we ended our conversation, she wanted me to assure her that I won’t think about the gadget anymore (she felt at that time that I couldn’t sleep if I couldn’t get my hands on that IPod) and I assured her that it was never a big deal. Being book lovers as we are also, she told me that books are more worthy to ponder upon than the music gadget. Of course, I couldn’t agree more. Above all things, books are our topmost priorities.

On that same week, I read a two-paged article from the Philippine Daily Inquirer that completely swept me off my feet. It was about Stephanie Meyer’s latest Twilight series which is actually a love story between a vampire lad and a mortal lass. This time, the urge came rushing all over me and literally, I couldn’t get enough sleep if I can’t get hold of that item, or shall I say, those items. It was like becoming a vampire myself longing to suck the books’ blood.

Inspired by J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Stephanie Meyer came out with her own Twilight sequel after having a very vivid dream of a particular scene: two teenagers having an intense conversation in the meadows. The guy was a fantastically beautiful vampire and the girl, just an average mortal. This particular scene can be read in Chapter 13 of Book One. Meyer admitted that she was never a writer in the first place. Because of that particular scene and being inspired by Rowling, she began writing the Twilight series amidst the busy life of motherhood. And as they say, the rest is history.

The sequel is now made into a movie and it stars Robert Pattinson as the teenage vampire named Edward Cullen and Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan, the mortal lass. Ironically, Pattinson plays the role of Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter movie. Stewart, on the other hand, plays Jodie Foster’s daughter in the movie “The Panic Room”.

The Twilight series is now available at Fully Booked bookstore. Man! This sequel sure is depressingly mouth-watering.

once again, this burning desire

Upon my request, my niece who is a second year Food Technology student at the University of the Philippines Mindanao, gave me a prospectus of the University’s Bachelor of Arts in English. As expected, that piece of paper has once again awoken my love for Literature and this burning desire to undergo into a deep and serious learning in order to gain complete knowledge on the literary works of classic writers such as Chaucer, Wordsworth, Shakespeare and the like.

friendly reminder

Friends (those who I only trust the most) and family members used to be so fond of borrowing my books any time of any day provided that they give extra care to these “precious ones”. But when I started to put some “friendly reminder” to each of my books, I wonder why they stopped borrowing books from me.

What’s so threatening about that?

yearning

There’s been a buzz that Davao City will be having its own Robinsons and Ayala Malls soon. In fact, constructions are already underway. I’ve been passing these sites everyday but I was just too “walang pakialam” about it, not even caring to ask what future buildings the city are adding this time. Then I heard just last week from friends and family that it’s gonna be Robinsons and Ayala Malls which undeniably tickled my excitement. Oh really? Is that so? Bloody hell! The thought of having these malls made me hoped to the highest degree that Davao City will finally be having stores like Powerbooks, Fully Booked (aside from National Bookstore of course) and Papemelroti. If that day would come, I’ll be dancing my famous Rain Dance to give glory to the Highest. If that day wouldn’t come, I’ll be performing my War Dance instead.

Powerbooks, Fully Booked and Papemelroti

paperback and hard-bound

I promised myself last week to temporarily cease from buying books to save up for my delivery next month. Besides, there are still a lot of books on my shelf that I haven’t read yet so purchasing one as of this time is definitely out of the question. Ha! You can say that again…

finally, my anya

When I was in high school, my friends and I used to have fictitious names. These names were very long and very elite-sounding and only the seven of us knew about it. I was the culprit behind this silly name-game. When I saw my sister’s book of Baby Names at that time, I didn’t know what came over me but I created seven names and gave each one to my gang mates. All of them liked it and from that time on, we used these fictitious names like it was our real ones.

e-card dilemma

When it comes to my GSIS E-card, nothing could beat it with regards to giving me stress and making me a foul-mouthed human being. If ours is likened to a relationship, our union would be made in HELL, no doubt!

For the last 8 months that I’ve been patiently waiting for my E-card (normally and supposed to be, processing of E-card renewal will only take a month), I finally got it yesterday. The very apologetic teller told me that I can already use it tomorrow (which is today). Today I went to Union Bank to try to check my balance because in the first place, I haven’t yet touched my GSIS dividend this year because my E-card was still on process at that time. The ATM screen shouted UNKNOWN SOURCE. Damn! Okay, fine. It would have been really okay if that was the only case. The thing is, the stupid machine captured my equally stupid card! And since this transaction was made early in the day, there were still no bank employees to turn to for assistance. That would mean I have to go back later in a day to try to salvage my stinking card. Why didn’t that teller told me it would be available after 24 hours! Grrrr…

Don’t think that’s the only trouble my E-card gave me. If one would really dig our relationship’s history, no one would blame me if I had this long-time urge of breaking this plastic card into pieces and burning it afterwards. Talk about committing a double murder, huh!

digging deeper this time

The first time I saw the movie “Dead Poet Society”, I was too young to really grasp the whole story. Errr…that means, no matter how many times I had seen it, I was still so naïve to dig deeper on its plot and its essence. For me then, it was a good movie merely because Ethan Hawke was on it. Imagine how low I could get those days? It was really a pity on my so-called intelligence. Ha Ha.

For the umpteenth time, I saw the movie last week together with my constant date – my husband – and man, I saw right there and then, what I had missed during those constant viewing when I was in my high school years. Seeing beyond the lovely face of the young Ethan Hawke, I realized two things on “Dead Poet Society”. The one thing, I would inculcate in me and my husband’s minds and the other, I would inculcate on my childrens’.

at last…the deathly hollows

Finally, my adventures with Harry Potter ended last night. And with that, I could not help having mixed emotions about it. Part of me was glad because I was able to reach the end. At least, it gave me the confirmation that Harry’s journey for seeking the truth and fighting for the good side had a happy ending after all. Although it was not really that happy because many lives were also lost, but JK Rowling still had the heart to let the Boy Who Lived continue to live together with his friends

Another part of me was also saddened by the thought that after reading this final series, there will be no more Harry Potter for me. The moment I finished reading the very last chapter of the Deathly Hollows, it undeniably heightened my desire to be with Harry and the rest of the gang once again. I suddenly missed them. There was that longing to go on and hoping that Rowling would someday think of coming up with another Harry Potter series. But as she said long time ago, there will only be seven series of Harry Potter. No more, no less. Deathly Hollows will definitely be the end…
